Traffic Control Signs and Markings
The Street Department is responsible for the installation, maintenance and management of all traffic control devices located on or in city streets.
Currently the department is involved in a lengthy and expensive process of upgrading all the traffic control devices within the city to meet new Federal Highway Safety Standards. An example of this is the new stop signs and street name signs residents may see around the city. This process will take several years to accomplish for as of last count the city had over 2000 traffic signs.
In an effort to increase public safety and compliance with Federal and State Highway standards, the city now only installs signs and markings in compliance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Signs and markings that are not in compliance with Federal and State standards are being removed and replaced when possible through normal and regular maintenance activities.
