Roadway Maintenance
- The Street Department maintains over 100 linear miles of city streets. In addition to repairing potholes and utility cuts made by public utilities, the department also maintains the following roadway maintenance programs.
- Asphalt Resurfacing Program - the department maintains a listing of city streets selected and prioritized for resurfacing based upon current surface conditions, traffic volumes, and rate of degradation. Streets in the worst conditions, with the highest volumes of traffic, and the fastest rate of degradation are resurfaced first as funding allows. Currently, the cost to resurface all the streets on this list would exceed $1,000,000 in comparison the City typically has an annual paving budget of $250,000. As streets are resurfaced they are removed from the list and new streets are added.
- Street Sweeping Program - All streets within the city that contain curb and gutter are swept weekly. For reason of safety, the street sweeping operations are conducted between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. five nights per week.
- Snow and Ice Removal Program - All streets within the city are prioritized for snow and ice removal during the winter weather events. Street with the highest volumes of traffic and streets that provide access to emergency services have the greatest priority. The city also now takes a proactive measure in snow and ice control, by pretreating the streets with salt brine prior to a winter storm. This action delays the accumulation of snow and ice and speeds up the process of its removal by preventing the snow and ice from bonding to the surface of the pavement.
